D has finished his first year of school. How exciting is that? Next year he'll join the big kids in Sr. Kindergarten. ALSO he's off the training wheels for good! (see pic below) ALSO he can float on his back unassisted when swimming! We're terribly proud of him. He's such a great kiddo. Here he is on his way on the last school day.
Paul has met 'the Great One', Wayne Gretzky. Paul works for the winery that makes Gretzky wine and Mr. Gretzky stopped by the winery to check things out. You can check it out here. There's a photo of the gang at the bottom of the page... we suspect that Wayne looked a bit worried because Erin, one of the assistant winemakers, was not there. Paul snagged himself an autographed bottle. Neat-o.
The weather has been mighty strange around here lately. Thumderstorms like you would not believe. Hail like nobody's business. It wouldn't worry me so much if we didn't have our camping vacation coming up. Christ, I've been rained out of a campsite... I have no desire to be hailed out of one.

Nooo! We went to dinner at Wild Orchid and were sorely disappointed :( We've raved about this place for ages but sadly, we don't think we'll be going back. The meal started off nice enough. Paul's sardines were a bit charred but we could live with that since the fava beans are to die for and we're really not terribly picky.
The problem was the shark. Yes, Paul ordered shark. He wanted D to give it a try so he held off getting what he really wanted so that D could have a taste. It was bad. Not bad in that we didn't like the flavour, but rather completely off-putting, "this shouldn't be in my mouth", bad. We each had one bite and left the rest.
The waitress asked if everything was okay and we told her that we suspected that the fish was a wee bit off. We heard at least one other person order the same dish so our main objective was to avoid anyone getting ill, otherwise we would have just left the food on the plate and not said a word. I still feel icky thinking about it today. Blah!
BTW, we were still charged for that sharky mess. It's too bad really. I liked that joint.
Some GOOD news. I got my birthday gift a bit early this year. Paul bought me a bicycle. D is very excited about it because now we can all go biking together. We went for a short ride yesterday and my ass is totally sore today. I think I'm going to buy myself a fancy, soft, padded seat for my delicate tush. You heard me, delicate.
Just so I don't feel like I'm a complainer here are some things I DO like...
- Mop and Glo... ahhh, shiny floors
- Final Net Hair spray... there is none better
- double roll toilet paper... I'll never buy single rolls again
- Mountain Coffee... my fave caffeine slinger in the mall, tastes like real coffee unlike that overcharged mess served by Starbucks.
- Cotton Ginny... they may not be trend setters but they sure are comfy (best pants ever! besides jamma pants)
Okay, I haven't updated in a couple of weeks but we've been crazy busy with little time to spare.
I'll start with Dante news. He finished his swim lessons today and will go on to be a salamander in two weeks. He did very well in his swimming and we're both pleased as punch that he's a little fish like his dad. Dante is also doing very well in soccer. He actually tried to head the ball at the last practice, and managed to get three goals. Now if they can just do that during a game :)
We took D and his friend Grant to see Kung Fu Panda last weekend and they were great. The movie was swell too... I love Jack Black. He makes me giggle.
We also had a Moroccan dinner party last weekend. It was nice, nothing crazy. Though Erin made the best soup ever and I'm soooo glad we got to keep the leftovers. See the left for one of the dishes we made... Moroccan Chicken Triangles with Parsley and Red Onion salad.
I've been working on my witchy website knickertwists.com. I'm well pleased with how it's turning out and I'm determined to keep it on track and not lose sight of what we're about.
Despite the fact that we are always busy at the moment we still manage to find time to bargain hunt and stop at as many garage sales as possible. We've made some pretty sweet purchases lately and I will post them soon. We didn't see a single one on the drive up to Paul's dad, but there seems to be one on every second street in the city on the weekends this summer.
Also exciting... we're going to dinner at the Wild Orchid tomorrow (yippie!), we're getting compost worms because the green bin is a horrible thing (hurrah!), and I'm taking 2 whole days to myself next week and I plan on doing nothing but spend quality time with my kiddo and veg.
I'm still sort of disallusioned by the fact that the Group of Seven artists weren't fighting off bears with one hand and holding a paint brush in the other. Ah well, I'm not ashamed to say that the Group of Seven aren't exactly my cuppa tea anyhow.
For the first time I've really been thinking about my artistic influences and those people whom I really admire. With that in mind here are some people I'm loving at the moment... Dave Grohl, Sister Wendy, Teesha Moore, Velázquez, Kit WIlliams, Keith Harring. Yes, I know that Dave and Sister Wendy are not artists but they seem to have a happy passion about their work and that is something I find inspiring.
On the arty front, I think I'm pretty much done with my arty wands and ready to move on to something a little different. I've bought myself three canvas' to do some landscapes. I really don't remember ever pulling off a decent landscape so this could be interesting.
Tomorrow is bargain hunting day! There is a giant (I mean effin; huge) garage sale near us this weekend and then we're off to my very favourite place (besides home) The Re-Use Centre. I have bought sooo much stuff from this place that is just itching to have something done to it. Too bad I have more stuff than I have time. One day I'll swear off buying more junk and get to making... who am I kidding? I'll always be a junk addict.
Lastly, I've been having loads of strange dreams lately. The other night I had a dream about Kevin Costner... we were in a terribly passionate relationship. The thing is that I really kind of can't stand Kevin Costner but since he was so nice in my dream I feel sort of awful about not liking him. I suppose it wouldn't get to me so much except that I have no idea why I am dreaming about him... it's not like Waterworld was on the telly. I'm ashamed to say that in my dream Kevin wasn't even sporting an Elvis outfit (as in the above photo) which would have made a little more sense. Ah well, could be worse... I could have been dreaming about James Woods.
We've just come back from our trip to Bon Echo. In all honesty it wasn't nearly as great as some of the other provincial parks we've been to like Sandbanks and the Pinery. I think that some of our disappointment was with the lack of privacy between the sites. The trees seemed to be a wee bit sparse and the sites were more open than in other parks we've camped at. This could be due to the fact that it wasn't all that long ago (I think less than 100 years) that much of the park was clear cut due to logging. The bugs were hellish and I am convinced that those bloody biting flying things are the spawn of Satan... I don't believe in the devil but those little buggers may make me change my mind.
It's a strange place, Bon Echo. The big attraction in Mezinaw Rock, a HUGE escarpment of granite. Even looking at the rock you can't quite grasp just how big it is. It's really big. Really. One thing that WAS really cool about the rock are the pictographs found on it's surface. It's also kinda cool that people really have no idea what they mean or exactly how they were put there.
Our imaginations are funny things. I always assumed (which is a very dumb thing to do) that the Group of Seven artists would camp out, passionately painting what they saw, surviving on what little they had until their vision was complete upon the canvas. Not so. When they painted at Bon Echo they stayed at a swank inn painting by day and sleeping snugly in warm beds with full tummies at night. Hmmm, this even makes me rethink the whole 'Van Gough was a nutter' and 'Picasso was a jackass' thing.
Check out my facebook profile to see photos of our trip.
I'm just taking a break from laundry and making dinner to attempt a quick update.
First of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!!!! Whee! What a great place to live :)
A little something newsworthy, my Dr. Who painting was one of several Dr. Who themed crafts featured on geekcrafts.com. It does me proud. Here is the specific thread.
I'm just wrapping up several spoon wands that I'm terribly proud of. I am having some issues getting great photos of them though. That's something I really do need to work on... more professional looking photos. It really makes your work look a zillion times better. Anyway, I'm not going to worry about it too much until after I place the finishing touches on my 'wishing wand' which will require the wishbone from this evenings meal. Ha!
Stuff we're really digging at the mo' as dictated by the little D... Marineland, dancing, karate, music, surfing (though he's never been), monster trucks, rockabilly.
P.S. I am absolutely giddy about going camping at Bon Echo in a week.
